Energy transition: sustainable renewables against the backdrop of growing global market demands

Introduction

The analysis of the report "Electricity Market Report 2023" (IEA) reveals that the demand for electricity around the world will increase again in the coming years. Although we are increasingly connected to the Internet, our needs still require many electronic devices, such as electric cars. According to experts, we will soon be obliged to switch to renewable energy sources, not only due to pro-ecological trends. The key factor is the visible depletion of natural resources, and burning them, as in the case of coal, brings more harm than benefits. Now get ready for a brief overview of this burning topic.

Alarming reports

Unusual weather phenomena, disasters and spreading drought areas constantly alert us to the harmful impact of burning non-renewable raw materials on the environment. In 2022, these processes resulted in the release of as much as 37.5 billion tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere! We are exceeding records at an alarming rate, resulting in huge losses. What awaits the next generations? Probably a desert and ruins.

Although it sounds like a scenario from "Mad Max", experts' predictions are disturbing - we may soon create conditions identical to those depicted in George Miller's film. These are not just empty threats. That is why decarbonization and the global introduction of green energy are so important. Increased energy demand will continue to be a problem, but renewable energy sources will help meet these needs. Many countries, particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, are starting to abandon coal mining in favor of hydro, wind or nuclear power plants. Norway and Iceland are already at the forefront of these activities.

Climate reality

Currently, the main source of electricity is coal, the extraction of which has a negative impact on the natural environment, and the combustion processes are a particular problem. In Europe, the share of coal in energy production is over 14%, while in Poland it is over 70%! In winter, the standards for benzoapyrene and aromatic hydrocarbons are exceeded up to 16 times! As a result, huge amounts of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere every year, which contributes not only to climate change, but also to air pollution and a negative impact on our health.

The second source of electricity after coal is crude oil, the extraction of which is also controversial. Floods into seas and oceans, oil pollution in groundwater and rising prices put us in a dilemma, turning our attention towards the green transformation.

Natural gas comes in third place, providing approximately 23% of global electricity production.

Green energy for electric cars

The use of energy from renewable sources is also crucial in the context of electric cars (EV). Demand for these types of vehicles continues to grow, supported by a variety of subsidy programs introduced in many countries. This, in turn, increases the demand for electricity. If everyone suddenly switched to electric, existing resources on Earth would be significantly depleted. Thanks to energy from renewable sources, we have the opportunity to maintain balance and introduce more technologically advanced solutions that are beneficial for our planet.

Zero-emission cars are a revolutionary solution for today. In addition to the lack of emissions of harmful particulate matter, EVs do not require operating fluids, which can also negatively impact the environment. The process of charging their batteries is extremely simple, and having your own EV charging station makes it even easier.

So if you are a happy owner of a zero-emission vehicle and are considering investing in EV charging station, the answer is YES! However, it is worth thinking about using electricity from renewable sources. A popular trend in Poland is the installation of solar panels, which bring significant savings. This makes charging your car profitable, especially compared to the costs of charging at public stations.

A ray of hope in the darkness

The only way out of the current crisis seems to be to stop using traditional energy sources. Thanks to this, there is a chance to achieve climate neutrality. By 2040, Norway is expected to become a world leader in renewable energy production, using only offshore wind energy. Ambitious plans include not only meeting its own energy needs, but also exporting green energy to other countries and quickly abandoning oil and gas extraction. In 2021, renewable energy in Norway accounted for more than half of total energy demand.

In China, over 50% of energy already comes from renewable sources. The country with the largest population, which for years has been at the top of the list of countries with the most environmental pollution, has committed to reducing coal consumption in the years 2021-2025. By 2030, China plans to increase its combined wind and solar capacity to at least 1,200 GW. The implementation of the climate neutrality goal has been set for 2060.

Compared to other countries, Poland still relies heavily on coal as its main energy source. However, the process of transformation towards green energy is also gaining momentum in our country. More and more companies are moving their plants to energy from renewable sources. Households use solar energy from photovoltaic panels. Thanks to this, they not only contribute to environmental protection, but also save significant amounts of money. According to research, at the end of December 2022, the total capacity of installed photovoltaic panels in Poland was 12,189.1 MW.

Conclusions

The energy transition is not only a necessity, but also a huge opportunity to create a better and more sustainable world. Investments in renewable energy sources and the development of green technologies should become a priority for all countries. Only through joint activity and consistent actions can we secure the future of our planet.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

  • What are the main benefits of using sustainable energy sources?

The obvious benefits of using sustainable energy sources are reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the natural environment and reducing dependence on non-renewable raw materials.

  • Are electric cars really greener?

Electric cars are much more ecological than combustion vehicles because they do not directly emit harmful substances such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen oxides.

  • What countries are leading in the energy transition?

Norway, China and Iceland are examples of countries that are leading the energy transition by investing in renewable energy sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

  • Is investing in solar panels on the roof profitable?

Investing in solar panels on your roof can be profitable in the long term, allowing you to save on electricity bills and reduce emissions.

  • How can we contribute to the fight against climate change at an individual level?

We can contribute to the fight against climate change at an individual level by reducing energy consumption, choosing clean means of transport, saving water and reducing waste.
