AFIR: Legislation to make electric cars easier to use

In pursuit of decarbonization and achieving climate neutrality, the European Union has adopted the expansion of infrastructure supporting zero-emission cars as one of its key goals.

With the arrival of 2024, the new AFIR (Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation) regulation entered into force, imposing an obligation on Member States to develop infrastructure supporting electric vehicles.

In short: charging becomes easier!

Fit for 55: Priority for Climate in EU Policy

Recently, alarming reports of increasingly frequent and more drastic weather phenomena and natural disasters have been coming from all over the world. Episodic earthquakes, floods and droughts that previously aroused our fear are now giving way to much more dangerous phenomena taking place on almost every continent. Forest fires, extreme flooding, melting glaciers - the climate clearly makes us understand that by ignoring its signals, we have reached a critical point. Fit for 55 is a step towards stopping the negative effects of climate change by investing in the development of alternative fuels infrastructure and other measures supporting environmental protection.

When can we expect changes in Europe?

The first effects are expected to be noticeable already in 2025.

AFIR: The Electric Age of Infrastructure

Fit for 55 is a comprehensive package of climate measures imposed on European Union member states, which introduces the AFIR directive. This directive, aimed at promoting electric cars, brings a number of benefits to both EV users and the environment. AFIR makes operating zero-emission cars easier and more environmentally friendly, making electric vehicles more attractive to consumers. Specific actions are planned as part of this plan.

An encouraging fact is that from 2025 in accordance with AFIR charging stations for electric cars with a power of up to 150 kW will be located every 60 km along the trans-European transport network TEN-T. Moreover, by 2025 it is planned to expand stations with chargers with a power of at least 350 kW, intended for trucks, also located every 60 or 100 km. By 2030, it is also planned to introduce hydrogen charging stations that will power the city market and the main TEN-T transport routes.

Another convenience will be the ability to pay for charging by card, which has not been standard so far. Many places required cash payments, which seems excessive and unnecessary in the era of widespread use of payment cards.

AFIR in Poland: Electromobility on a growth path

In Poland, the infrastructure for electric vehicles still leaves much to be desired, and problems with access to electricity are growing like an iceberg. But now it's time for a change.

The growing demand for infrastructure for electric vehicles requires quick action to keep up with our neighbors and become a favorable environment for the development of alternative energy sources.
