Do you have or are you planning to buy an electric car? You will probably also be interested in where to charge your vehicle and how much does charging an electric car cost? With increasing environmental awareness and technological progress, electric cars are becoming more and more popular on the roads. However, the basic question that many of us ask ourselves before purchasing an electric vehicle is: "Where will I be able to charge it?" In this article, we will look at different options for charging electric cars, the costs and the availability of charging stations.
Popularity of electric cars in Poland
In Poland, as in many other countries, there is a visible increase in interest in electric cars. This is evidenced by both the increasing number of registrations of electric vehicles and the growing charging infrastructure. Automotive companies are increasingly offering electrically powered models. Despite this, challenges remain with the charging infrastructure.
Problem with availability of charging places
Even despite the growing popularity of electric cars, there is still a shortage of places to charge them. This is particularly noticeable in urban areas, where large concentrations of people using electric vehicles can mean thatexisting charging stations cannot keep up with demand. However, there are initiatives to increase the number of charging stations to meet the growing needs of electric vehicle users.
How much does it cost to charge an electric car?
When charging an electric car at a public station, it is important to consciously approach the costs, which may vary depending on the location and station operator. On average, the cost of charging at a public station is approximately PLN 2 for each kilowatt hour of electricity consumed. However, please note that these prices may vary depending on current rates and fees.
In turn, if you decide to charge your electric car at home, the costs will usually be lower. Depending on the selected tariff plan, the price per kilowatt hour of energy consumed may be approximately PLN 60. This is definitely a better option for users who want to save on the costs of charging their electric vehicle, especially if they use home energy resources.
How long does it take to charge an electric car?
How long does it take to charge an electric car? The charging time of an electric car depends on many factors, which include both the parameters of the charging station itself and the characteristics of the vehicle. The type and power of the station, as well as the technical specifications of the car, such as battery capacity or maximum charging speed, have a significant impact on the time it will take to charge the vehicle.
Where can you charge electric cars outside your home? At DC (direct current) fast charging stations, you can charge an electric car much faster compared to AC (alternating current) charging stations. This is mainly due to differences in power and technical characteristics of both types of stations.
On average, fast DC stations can charge an electric car in about 30 minutes, which is a significant advantage for users who need quick access to a full battery charge.
However, at AC charging stations, the charging time may be much longer and range from several to several hours, depending on the charging power and capacity of the vehicle's battery. This charging method is more suitable for cases where the car can be charged for a longer period of time, for example when parked overnight in a home garage.
Where to charge an electric car?
Electric owners can take advantage of various options when it comes to where to charge their electric car. The three basic options worth paying attention to are:
- DC charging stations
- AC wallboxes
- AC charging stations.
DC charging stations
There is no doubt that DC charging stations are one of the most popular ways of charging in public spaces. They can be found, among others: at gas stations adjacent to motorways. What makes public charging points so willing to be equipped with them? Their most important advantage is the high charging speed - in this respect they have a significant advantage over AC charging stations. This is due to the fact that the process of replenishing energy using a DC charging station is much simpler. The direct current from the DC charging station goes directly to the batteries, while the alternating current from the AC charging station must first be properly converted by the converter built into the electric car, which reduces the charging power.
DC charging stations are characterized by high charging powers, which means they require industrial connections and, among others, for this reason, they rarely function as home installations.Due to the maximum power criterion, they can be divided into:
- fast DC charging stations that can reach a maximum power of up to 50 kW,
- super-fast charging stations, where the maximum power can be up to 150 kW,
- ultra-fast charging stations with a maximum power of up to 350 kW.
It is worth adding that - similarly to AC charging stations - DC charging stations can be mounted in a wallbox system, on a pole or as free-standing stations.
AC Wallboxes
Where can you charge an electric car? One of the solutions for people who have an electric car is installing a wallbox at home or workplace. Wallbox AC is a type of AC charger that allows you to quickly and conveniently charge your vehicle without the need to use public charging stations. Thanks to the wallbox, you can charge your car in the comfort of your own garage or in the parking lot in front of the office.
